H: The Strength is in the Pack Trailer

In 2015, Coach Hatim Jean-Louis, also known as Coach H, undertook the remarkable task of revitalizing a struggling citywide cross country running program in Boston, MA. This cooperative team was designed to bring together students from various public high schools across the city. However, the journey was far from easy. In the initial years, faced with a pool of 50,000 potential students, Coach H grappled to assemble a complete team of seven boys. Even those who participated often found themselves at the back of the pack during races. Through nine years of unwavering dedication and hard work, the Boston Public Schools Citywide XC program has experienced tremendous growth and transformation. Coach H's efforts have borne fruit, with the team making significant strides. Notably, Coach H is currently working on building a complete team of seven girls, a remarkable achievement in itself. Furthermore, the boys' team is now within reach of a historic milestone - qualifying for the MA State Championships for the very first time.

Reflecting on the journey, let's take a look at the team's progress over the years:

  • - Fall 2015: Boys team average was 19:57, placing 24th out of 25 teams in Division 1.

  • - Fall 2016: Boys team average improved to 19:44, finishing 24th out of 24 teams in Division 1.

  • - Fall 2017: Boys team continued to improve with an average of 18:07, achieving 19th place out of 26 teams in Division 3.

  • - Fall 2018: Boys team's average further dropped to 17:46, securing 11th place out of 29 teams in Division 3.

  • - Fall 2019: Boys team continued their progress with an average of 17:17, resulting in an 8th place finish out of 27 teams in Division 3.

  • - Fall 2020: The pandemic took a toll on BPS sports, necessitating a restart due to new alignments.

  • - Fall 2021: Boys team's average was 19:04, attaining a 12th place finish out of 20 teams.

  • - Fall 2022: A significant milestone was reached as the boys' team achieved an impressive average of 17:17, securing 4th place out of 24 teams in Division 1C. This marked the first time BPS was ranked among the top 20 teams in Massachusetts and a top 10 team in Division 2.

Coach H's dedication and perseverance have not only transformed the Citywide XC program but also the lives of countless students. The progress made over the years is a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and the indomitable spirit of athletes and their coach.H: The Strength is in the Pack chronicles the team's historic season.

"Hip-Hop Journeys: Where Dreams Became Tangible Goals" Rest In Peace Santos Night Club aka Santos Party House

Rest In Peace Santos Night Club aka Santos Party House

In this edition of Hip-Hop Journeys, as we celebrate Hip-Hop's legacy, I can't express enough gratitude for how it has become the soundtrack of my life, paving the way for my global adventures and preparing me for the future. The stage was set in New York City, with an Indian summer vibe, the cool breeze sweeping through the city, and temperatures in the pleasant 80s, creating the perfect atmosphere.

On September 1st, 2010, the Rock The Bells Tour made its stop at Governors Island in NYC, promising potential special guests and surprises. A big shoutout to Dan Green from Clockwork Music Inc., a globally diverse company specializing in talent booking, concert marketing, production, online marketing, and project consultation, for promoting and marketing the event. The concert would feature Hip-Hop legends AZ and Cormega, along with opening acts brothers Willie The Kid & LA The Darkman. For me, this marked a significant milestone as I would be hosting my first major show in NYC while handling the promotion and marketing.

The primary goal was to ensure a great turnout, and the pre-ticket sales were already showing promising signs.

As they say, "If you can make it in New York City, you can make it anywhere," and that morning, I experienced the truth behind this cliché. Savoring my tea, croissant, and egg cheese sandwich with turkey bacon from the Bodega, I took the 4 train from 183rd and Jerome to Wall Street Station, and from there, I walked to the pier for Governors Island. As a native Bostonian, I embraced the city's atmosphere whenever I traveled on public transportation, appreciating the sights and being mindful of my surroundings. Governor's Island reminded me of Thompson's Island back home in Boston. To reach Governors Island, I had to take the NYC ferry, and upon arrival, the music filled the air, with two stages set up - the Main Stage for the headline act and smaller stages for upcoming artists.

Positioning myself strategically between the two stages, I seized the opportunity to personally hand out flyers for the show to people leaving the venue or moving between stages. Although I hadn't secured tickets to attend the show, a stroke of fate led me to encounter a distressed young lady who worked for Rock The Bells. Her date had stood her up, leaving her with all-access guest passes, which she generously offered to me. Gratefully, I found myself backstage with the crème de la crème of the Hip-Hop industry, no longer needing to distribute flyers. I was now adding the headline acts to the guest list for the evening event. My dreams had become tangible goals as I witnessed my first major show, with an iconic and legendary guest list. From Ras Kass West Coast legend & Lyrcists, to Consequence fresh off A Tribe Called Quest rocking, RIP Phife Dawg was still alive, Dres from Blacksheep, my big Bro Vic Black Gangstarr, and the Legend DJ Tony Toca Touch. There were so many more these were the pics I could salvage.

Now its showtime, I hopped into a cab and headed to Club Santos, also known as Santos Party House, located at 96 Lafayette Street in the Tribeca neighborhood. There, I reunited with my brother DGomez, and our friend joey had made the trip from Boston to film the night's unforgettable moments. It truly was a night to remember - my first time seeing AZ live, alongside Nature, Craig G, and the electrifying mic exchange that went down in Hip-Hop history at the 1:10 mark. It all flowed seamlessly, akin to a baton pass, with the crowd united in their clear requests. You can see my big bro from Queensbridge, The Testament himself Cormega, and The Revelations bringing down the house.

Here’s another angle from the night ! Salute to Grandgood

Coach H NBIN 2023 Announcing Schedule

Dear Families and Student Athletes of Massachusetts Track and Field,

I am writing to you today with a profound sense of sincerity, humility and gratitude, so please bare with me if I seem somewhat scattered. It is not often I get nervous or anxious to express myself, but in this circumstance I can only feel what I feel. For the last five years I have connected with you, whether it be from interviews, preview shows, live play-by-play commentary or simply a selfie. Now, I am able to say that my mantra - Dreams are Tangible Goals - has paid off for me in the biggest way possible: I am proud to announce that I will be part of the New Balance Indoor Nationals 2023 Broadcast team.

I started coaching in 2013 as an Assistant Coach at South Boston High School with my friend and former 800 Meter National Champion Said Ahmed. I entered the Coaching fraternity seeking to make a difference in the lives of the student-athletes in the Boston Public Schools. Despite my desire and intentions, I never thought that my words would inspire, motivate, and resonate with people from various walks of life from all around the world the way that I see them.

Sport is a very powerful tool that can connect people from different social and economic backgrounds. I’ve realized this despite the positive and negative experiences I have had in the realm - and I am grateful for the plethora of emotions my journey has allowed me to feel.

My role as a commentator and content creator has changed my life forever. My only goal has always been to make sure that every kid that I encounter - or who encounters me - has a memorable experience.

The sports of Cross Country & Track and Field are the toughest sports out there, but they don’t get nearly the proper coverage they deserve. I am truly honored that you have given me a chance to bring these sports to you in a personal and informative way.

This is why I am so grateful to be a part of the NBIN 2023 Broadcast team. Below is my schedule for the four days of NBIN.

My performance will be dedicated to my All #MyHomeGirls, #MyMainMan’s out there grinding> It will be dedicated to all the families nationwide and worldwide who have always tuned in with me over the course of the years.

Thank you Cooper & Dave from Trials By Miles for supporting me in this process. I want to say a special thank you and a huge salute to Andy Downin, Mary Lawton and most importantly Tom Carleo from New Balance in believing in my talent and giving a local boy an opportunity of a lifetime.

I promise that I will do my best to ensure this is THE GREATEST NATIONAL EVER now that Coach H is involved!

Don’t forget to Hashtag all weekend long #MyMainMan #MyHomeGirl Twitter #nbnationals | Instagram #nbnationals

The Fastest Party on the planet is going to be in my backyard and I am putting on my dancing shoes ladies and gentlemen - I CANNOT WAIT! Good luck to all the student-athletes, near and far. Enjoy the experience and never forget it!

Most Sincerely,

Coach H

Bob Beamon: The Legacy Beyond The Leap @Milesplit

The good Folks at Flo Sports are aware that is Black History Month..

Bob Beamon is synonymous with one of the greatest track and field performances in history, the 29-foot, 2.5-inch world record in the long jump he set at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, a mark which eclipsed the former record by almost two feet and still stands as the Olympic record.

But few realize that Beamon almost sacrificed that opportunity standing up for civil rights. In 1968, the University of Texas at El Paso was gathering steam as legitimate national championship contender. The engine powering that team was Beamon, a junior long jumper out of Queens, New York. He was undefeated on the year and had set the world indoor record.

But the year was also one of the most tumultuous in American history. The Vietnam War was raging, there were hardening class differences, severe economic problems and an increasingly impatient civil rights movement that gave rise to combative and angry black power advocates. Harry Edwards launched the Olympic Project For Human Rights, which sought reforms through the organization of a potential boycott of the Olympics.

Beamon and the UTEP track team were able to withstand the outside pressure until April 4, 1968. While the team was in Austin preparing to compete at the Texas Relays, news spread that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated in Mississippi.

Four days later, Beamon and 10 of his Black teammates decided to boycott a tri-meet against BYU and Utah State over the racist teachings of the Mormon Church. They all had they scholarships revoked.

This is the story of how the man who could fly was nearly grounded for standing against racism.
